Shooting

Sometimes a shooter will have to brave ridicule and even hostility from friends and family who believe that all shooting sports involve the death of small or large furry animals. While it is true that hunting by and large involves the use of firearms, the facts that there are other games that allow the participant to shoot are not always on the forefront of the critics’ minds. Similarly, with the increase in shootings that leave innocents dead, sports and recreational shooters are facing an uphill battle.

The Guild of Shooting Instructors is very clear that anytime anyone handles a gun there is a chance of injury and thus safety procedures must be followed to the last detail. Additionally, because so many novices will engage in their own shooting games, the injuries reported on the nine o’clock news are frequently the results of improper handling or setup and not truly the results of engaging in a trick shooting contest.

For example, for those who do not see hunting as one of the shooting sports, the practice of hitting miter shooting boards during target practice is considered by many a bona fide sport. A shooters’ bible for such an activity will specify which rules to follow, and those who like to engage in such target shooting (USA gun owners are usually the ones much more enamored with this practice than those in other countries) will be able to use a pistol, rifle, or shotgun. Shooting at targets needs to be done in a closed environment to ensure that nobody might move into the line of fire; similarly, shooting times are usually assigned to different parties to make sure that the shooters are not being distracted by groups waiting their turns.

If mounted shooting is more to your liking, you will find that target shooting games in arcades will be plentiful. While precision shooting with such a setup is not readily attained, the arcade shooting games which rely on a mount will help those who enjoy target practice but cannot get out to the local firing range to make do. Additionally, some of the shooting games objected to strenuously by parents and educators are found in such arcades. This type of shooting is quite removed from the actual sport and is more of a mindless pastime that hones the trigger finger and the ability to hit a button really, really fast as opposed to the hand eye coordination required in target practice.
